After rejecting a plan to raise their own pay, Forsyth County commissioners deadlocked last week on doing a detailed study of commissioner compensation that would have included a comparison to nearby counties.

Commissioners tied 2-2 Sept. 26 whether to move ahead with a study by the Mercer Group that would have looked at whether commissioner compensation should be increased starting in 2019. It was one of two study proposals submitted by the group, one looking at only compensation, the other at compensation and workload analysis. Board members decided to put the matter on a work session agenda after the commission is back at full strength.

South Forsyth resident Dennis Brown was the only candidate to qualify for the District 2 commission seat vacated earlier this year by Rick Swope. He is set to join the elected group after the November election. Swope resigned to take an executive position with a financial services firm.

This summer, commissioners turned down a plan to raise commissioner pay to $48,000, with the chairman going to $49,500. That’s close to $10,000 above current levels.
