The Forsyth County Public Facilities Authority has approved a multi-million-dollar revenue bond funding resolution for a proposed workforce development academy.
The Alliance Academy for Innovation of Forsyth County would be a nontraditional college and career academy for 9th-through-12th grade students and represents a partnership among the facilities authority, the city of Cumming (which would provide the land), and Forsyth County Schools. It would serve up to 1,000 students. The academy would focus on high-demand and high-wage occupations.
The resolution places a $20 million cap on revenue bonds the authority would issue for construction of the campus. A county spokesman said that subsequent additional funding requests could be made. The resolution also requests assistance from the Georgia General Assembly, in that a modest revision to the PFA’s enabling resolution will be needed to clarify that revenue bond projects involving schools are okay.
The academy is the first project to be funded through the authority since it was created in 2008.
