After a series of break-ins at Forsyth County fire stations earlier this year, security upgrades are on the way.

Forsyth commissioners voted 5-0 to award contracts for a series of improvements at up to 13 stations. The county’s fire chief earlier this year had asked to use fire funds in the amount of up to $300,000 for those improvements. The contracts cover standalone security cameras for 13 stations for roughly $77,100, exterior lighting for 11 for some $38,900, access card systems for 11 stations for just short of $34,000 and fencing upgrades for two locations for about $11,000.

The county’s purchasing director said all together the improvement costs total some $160 867, just over half of what was originally budgeted.

A series of break-ins plagued several Forsyth County fire stations in early 2017, with guns and other items taken from cars and trucks whose windows had been smashed. Several surrounding cities and counties also reported fire station burglaries.
