The former city manager of Waleska has been arrested following a four-week investigation into missing city funds.
Cherokee County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Jay Baker said in a news release that Aimee Abernathy, 43, of Cartersville turned herself in at the Cherokee County jail late Thursday and remained in custody Friday morning.
Baker said she’s charged with two counts of felony theft by taking. She’s accused of making more than $14,000 in fraudulent payroll payments to herself during the almost five years she served as manager in the Cherokee County town.
She also faces charges of using two city credit card accounts to make some $8,000 in personal purchases. Baker said additional charges are possible.
Abernathy resigned in late October, reportedly to take another government job in Bartow County.
