The name and picture of former Kennesaw Mayor and Councilmember Leonard Leroy Church will be removed from city plaques and the Council Chambers, following a Nov. 20 vote by the Kennesaw City Council. A funding source will have to be identified for the city staff to amend or remake the building dedication plaques.

In June 2014, Church was arrested on two charges with four charges added later involving child molestation and sexual exploitation of children. In January 2015, he then was indicted and later convicted on six counts of crimes against children.

At nearly 70, Church has 17 years remaining in prison for twice molesting and injuring a 9-year-old boy after showing him pornographic images of children of the nearly 1,000 child porn images on computers in Church’s home. In November 1999, Church first was elected as mayor and served two terms before being elected to the City Council in November 2013.
