Former Cobb firefighter dies in house fire in Smyrna

His elderly wife was rescued.

Cobb County firefighters were unable to save a retired firefighter when his long-time home burned Wednesday.

Charles and Laverne Beavers were trapped in the house on King Arthur Court in Smyrna when a fire broke out in their kitchen, authorities said. Laverne Beavers pounded on a bathroom window to call for help and firefighters pulled her to safety, but a rescue team located her 87-year-old husband on the floor in the hallway, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The rescuers pulled him out of the front door, but despite giving him CPR, they were unable to save him.

The couple had “just celebrated 66th or 67th wedding anniversary totally in love,” Johnny Morris, the couple’s son-in-law, told the news station. “Just a sad day of heartbreak.” The couple had lived in the house since the 1960s, a family member told Channel 2.

Beavers retired from the Atlanta fire department and started his own business years ago and was a “hard working, good man,” Morris said.
