DeKalb County firefighters battled an apartment fire Friday morning.
The fire was at the Terraces at Brookhaven on the 3500 block of Buford Highway in Brookhaven.
Channel 2's Ryan Young said the fire started on the backside of the building and spread fast because there was no firewall. Firefighters said the fire spread so quickly, that residents had to jump from the windows to escape the flames.
Two residents suffered cuts to their hands after jumping out the window.
“My roommate looked out the peephole and there was nothing there. So I said, ‘Open the door,’ and he opened up the door and [there was] smoke. It was like a movie, it started going over his head,” said one resident.
Two girls had to be rescued by ladder from the second floor of the building by a maintenance worker before fire crews arrived.
“I catch them, I catch them at the bottom and we caught them. The kids were screaming,” said maintenance worker Craig Larry.
There were no reports of any serious injuries in the fire.
The fire destroyed the majority of the units at the apartments.
“We don’t know how it started yet. Initial crews arrived on scene and found moderate smoke conditions coming from the center part of the building. We had maintenance crews on scene pulling people out of the back side,” said Greg Rucker from the DeKalb County Fire Department.
Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire.
