A firefighter is recovering Wednesday after being airlifted to a hospital after his fire truck collided with a tractor-trailer Tuesday night.

Five other Clayton County firefighters also were injured, but they were released from the hospital, according to Clayton County Fire Department spokeswoman Jacqueline Feilke. The remaining firefighter will stay in the hospital for one more night for observation, she said.

The wreck occurred at Old Dixie Highway and Central Avenue in Forest Park around 7 p.m. while the firefighters were responding to a call, according to Gordy Wright, spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol.

The fire truck, with lights and sirens activated, was traveling southbound on Old Dixie Highway when it approached the rear of a tractor-trailer that was also southbound, Wright said. As the tractor-trailer was attempting to turn left onto Central Avenue, it struck the right side of the fire truck, which had moved into a northbound lane, according to investigators.

One of the injured firefighters, whose names were not released, was flown to Atlanta Medical Center and the others were transported by ambulance, Wright said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer complained of injury but was not taken to the hospital, Wright said.

No charges are being filed.
