A family of five has been displaced from their Loganville home after a fire damaged the entire structure, Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services said.

The fire began shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday.  An adult occupant of the home noticed a “flicker” at the front of the house and found that the front porch was on fire, according to a Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services release. The man tried to extinguish the flames, but was unsuccessful.

The fire alarms in the home did not go off because the fire was on the porch, so the man went back inside and helped his family members evacuate, the release said.

A neighbor called 911 after seeing the home was on fire. All five occupants — two adults and three children — were able to escape the home before firefighters arrived at 6:59 p.m.

Firefighters were able to “knock down” much of the fire from above using a crane and by using defensive hose lines that prevented the fire from spreading to neighbors’ homes, the release said. They then completed extinguishing the fire from inside the home, which had damage throughout.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and has not been determined. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
