A fire broke out at the Guess clothing store at Perimeter Mall shortly before 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

The blaze was quickly extinguished, but heavy smoke lingered in the store and smoke could be smelled throughout much of the mall. Officials said the mall would open at 10 a.m. as scheduled.

"Our main priority now is to get the smoke out of the mall so they can open for business," DeKalb County Assistant Fire Chief Norman Augustin told the AJC just before 9 a.m. as firefighters used fans to clear the smoke.

Augustin said firefighters responded to a report of clothes on fire. The cause has not been undetermined, he said.

Another fire official said it was a jeans display that caught fire and it was extinguished by mall security.

Augustin said he did not have an estimate on the damage.

The Guess store will be closed today.
