An estimated 100 students from 72 households will be withdrawn from Fayette County public schools on Friday if their residency has not been verified by then. The Board of Education voted 3-1-1 Monday to take the action after county staff worked all semester to get the required documentation from the children’s parents.
Superintendent Joseph Barrow Jr. said he regrets the potential negative impact on students, but acknowledged community concern about non-residents possibly attending Fayette County schools. Board member Leonard Presberg opposed the measure, questioning the relative value of staff time spent on the verification process. Dan Colwell abstained.
Students could still re-enroll for the spring semester if they prove residency.
