Citing concerns about public safety and liability, the Fayette County Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 Tuesday to reject a proposal to allow gun ranges on 10-acre residential lots.

The current ordinance restricts the use of rifles and pistols to lots of 25 acres or more. Commissioner Randy Ognio suggested the change at a citizen’s request, and Steve Brown amended the motion to require backstops built to national standards and subject to county inspection.

The measure would have allowed gun ranges on any of the 923 qualifying properties, which commissioners David Barlow, Charles Oddo and Charles Rousseau decided was too much potential liability for the county.
