Eighteen automatic fire hydrant flushers are being installed within Fayette County’s water system to help improve water quality.

The units, identifiable by red rectangular attachments to the hydrants, will flush limited amounts of water at regular intervals day and evening to limit the amount of time water stays in the line. Water System Director Lee Pope said the units would be placed near storm drains to minimize erosion or water pooling in the road.

The installation might cause temporary water discoloration or a drop in water pressure; anyone experiencing either can report it by calling 770-461-1146, option 5.
