Fayette County denies rezoning off Ebenezer Road

A family’s request to rezone nearly 39 acres off Ebenezer Road in Fayetteville was denied by the Fayette County Board of Commissioners on May 10.

Representatives for Shelly M. Godby and the late Regina D. Godby were seeking to redevelop the property for single-family homes. The two parcels, which face Ebenezer Road and Davis Road, are currently zoned agricultural residential; the request to subdivide them into 17 lots would have required R-70 rezoning. Several county residents spoke out against the “high-density creep” of smaller lots.

Although the Planning Commission recommended approval of the rezoning in 2016, the current Fayette board split 2-2 (with Eric Maxwell recusing himself) on whether the request aligned with the county’s land use plan.
