In an effort to increase the socialization, visibility and adoption of more animals at its shelter, Fayette County is implementing a “day foster” program that will allow volunteers to bring cats or dogs into their homes for up to 60 days.
The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the plan on June 14. Under the guidelines, approved animals will be released to approved caregivers after the latter sign an indemnity agreement. Foster homes will be inspected by shelter staff before animals are released, and caregivers must agree to basic housing and care conditions. The cost of supplies and veterinary services will be covered by the county.
The program, which was endorsed by the Fayette Humane Society, will also help alleviate crowding at the shelter. However, animals in foster care will still be subject to time limits that affect their chance of euthanasia.
