After evaluating bids from two companies, Fayette County has approved a contract for $14.9 million to purchase a new emergency radio system serving the police and fire departments.

The Board of Commissioners voted 3-0-2 on July 12 to choose the E.F. Johnson Company over Motorola to supply materials and software related to towers, network management, dispatch consoles, radios and data. The contract includes a 15-year system upgrade agreement and a $1 million discount for up-front purchase. Funding will come from SPLOST revenue.

The county’s current system was reaching the end of its useful life, and the criteria used by a county committee for evaluating the two bids was based on cost, coverage and reliability.
