The Fayette County Board of Commissioners has backed off a proposed resolution that would have asked the state to halt the widening of McDonough Road from Henry County into Fayette.

The board instead voted 5-0 on May 10 to refer the matter to the county’s transportation committee in hopes of persuading the Georgia Department of Transportation to modify plans to turn the two-lane road into a four-lane thoroughfare that would divert traffic off I-75 but could exacerbate congestion in downtown Fayetteville and hamper access to McCurry Park. The widening project has not yet begun, but final plans for it are expected to be developed in the next six months or so.

The commission wants to have a new proposal to consider at its June 14 meeting, which would also include input from the county attorney and other staff members.
