High school seniors rushing to finish early decision college applications will receive some relief as colleges have extended deadlines because of Hurricane Sandy.

Emory University extended its deadline to Nov. 5 from Nov 1. Students will still know by Dec. 15 if they were admitted, according to information on the college’s web site.

The deadline for Emory’s second round of early decision applications remains Jan. 1, 2013.

A growing number of students across the country are taking advantage of programs that allow them to apply early and the option has become common among the nation’s most competitive public and private colleges. More than two in five freshmen at Emory College of Arts and Science were admitted through early decision.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling reminded colleges that some students may have trouble meeting early decision and early action deadlines because of extended power outages caused by the storm. Many of these deadlines are Nov. 1.

The deadline at Agnes Scott College is Nov. 15, but officials said they “will be flexible when the date approaches.”

University of Georgia and Georgia Tech don’t have Nov. 1 early action deadlines. These forms were due by Oct. 15 at both schools.

UGA extended to Nov. 5 the deadline for Foundation Fellowship applications and supporting documents. The original due date was Nov. 1.
