Duluth learned in late March of a serious stormwater pipe failure on Blue Ridge Industrial Parkway. Video of the pipe showed severe damage resulting in the collapse of the slopes on adjoining private detention ponds. This damage was expanding to the shoulder of Blue Ridge Industrial Parkway where a sinkhole formed and is now expanding toward the roadway surface.

The pipe is crushed and corroded to such a degree, it is siphoning dirt from above, where it is carried into an adjoining pond that then drains into Berkeley Lake, where it is causing the lake to turn color.

Due to the extent of the damage, Duluth City Council on Monday approved $488.538 for emergency repairs with Gwinnett County Public Schools contributing $100,000 toward the project.

Fixing the problem will require removing a section of the road and replacing the pipe and the road in stages. A temporary road will be laid in the right of way to allow vehicles access.
