May 9, 2012Law professor Anne Emanuel and Atlanta lawyer Michael Caplan were honored Tuesday night for their commitment to justice during a reception at Newcastle, the Italian Renaissance Revival mansion of noted attorney Ed Garland and his wife Judy.
The Southern Center for Human Rights gave Emanuel, author of "Elbert Parr Tuttle: Chief Jurist of the Civil Rights Revolution," its Lifetime Achievement Award. Caplan, a lawyer at Bondurant, Mixson & Elmore, was given the Gideon's Promise Award for his work in a recently settled right-to-counsel lawsuit.
Bill Rankin has been an AJC reporter for more than 30 years. His father, Jim Rankin, worked as an editor for the newspaper for 26 years, retiring in 1986. Bill has primarily covered the state’s court system, doing all he can do to keep the scales of justice on an even keel. Since 2015, he has been the host of the newspaper’s Breakdown podcast.
