Voters in Sandy Springs may have been hitting the snooze button on Election Day.

Polls opened at 7 a.m. at St. Jude Catholic Center on Glenridge Drive, and poll manager Reneatta Austin said only 10 had voted by 7:20 a.m.

“We’re expecting a pretty good turnout, but I think a lot of people voted early,” said Austin, who has managed the poll since 2012.

Austin said the poll usually runs pretty smoothly and they haven’t experienced any recent issues.

“We’re not usually a super busy precinct,” she said.

Aside from the statewide elections, there are a few local races on the ticket of importance to Sandy Springs voters this cycle. For Ga. House District 52, incumbent Deborah Silcox is facing a primary challenger in Gavi Shapiro. On the Democrat side of that race, Shea Roberts is running unopposed.

In Ga. House District 51, two candidates are seeking the seat of Wendell Willard, who is not seeking re-election. There is one candidate on each side of the aisle in Democrat Josh McLaurin and Republican Alex Kaufman.

For state senate races, three Democrats are vying for the chance to challenge Republican incumbent John Albers in the general election for the District 56 seat. They are Jim Guess Jr., Ellyn Jeager and Patrick Thompson. Albers isn’t facing any competition in the GOP primary.

In Ga. Senate District 40, Democrats Sally Harrell and Tamara Johnson-Shealey are trying to advance to the general election to challenge incumbent Republican Fran Millar.

In Fulton County, commission chair Rob Pitts is trying to defend a seat he won in a special election last year and will try to hold off challenger Keisha Sean Waites.

Finally, in the U.S. Congressional 6th District race — which received national attention last year because of the expensive battle between Jon Ossoff and eventual winner Karen Handel — four Democrats are trying to advance to the runoff to face Handel, in an attempt to do what Ossoff couldn’t and “flip the 6th.” They are Kevin Abel, Steven Knight Griffin, Bobby Kaplen and Lucy McBath.

Mary Stehlin was one of the early risers in Sandy Springs, and finished casting her ballot around 7:35 a.m.

Stehlin, 59, said she came out to vote to "support the Democrats" and felt particularly passionate about 6th Congressional District candidate Kevin Abel.

"I liked his statements about women's choices and he came across as being sincere," she said.

Stehlin said she went to the polls Tuesday feeling strongly about local issues on transit and defined district lines.

“There are a lot of good ideas that we need to get a little more progressive about,” Stehlin said.
