Edwards: New school needed by 2018

Even without annexation the Decatur school system will need a new school, a K-5 on the city’s north side, by 2018-19 or earlier, said Decatur Schools Superintendent Phyllis Edwards.

The alternatives, she said, are adding a lot more trailers, or building onto existing schools — which have limited space — or taking land by imminent domain. The school board is holding an executive session on real estate 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Central Office/Beacon Municipal Center, 125 Electric Ave.

Legally no details of the meeting have to be released unless action — or voting on specific land — is taken, but Edwards said she won’t ask for a vote Wednesday. She even has a call out to DeKalb Interim CEO Lee May asking about his proposal to move county offices out of DeKalb during last week’s state of the county address.

“I’d like to make him understand our dilemma,” she said. “I’d like to ask what buildings they might be leaving, if they leave, and what land might be available.”
