Friday’s morning commute began mostly dry across metro Atlanta, with only a few passing sprinkles, but with temperatures hovering around the freezing mark, transportation officials were keeping a close eye on the changing weather.
The northeast corner of the state, from Forsyth and Hall counties northward, was under a winters storm warning Friday, while a freezing rain advisory was posted for the rest of metro Atlanta and north Georgia, as far south as Griffin.
Several school systems in north Georgia cancelled or delayed classes on Friday as forecasters were predicting the possibility of up to a quarter-inch of ice accumulations in the warning area.
Temperatures at 6 a.m. Friday ranged from 28 degrees in Gainesville and 31 in Alpharetta, Dunwoody and near downtown to 33 at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and 37 in Peachtree City.
In far northeast Georgia, it was 24 near Clayton and 27 in Blairsville.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said the chance of precipitation is 60 percent on Friday, with the bulk of any precipitation expected to fall as rain across much of metro Atlanta. Highs Friday should reach the mid-40s, followed by lows Friday night in the mid-30s.
Sunny skies are forecast for Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the low to mid-50s and lows in the 30s.
Minton’s extended forecast calls for a big warm up next week, with highs in the low 60s Monday and near 70 degrees Tuesday.
