Ten years ago Monday, the first 40 officers of the Dunwoody Police Department took to the streets.
At midnight on April 1, 2009, the officers turned on their patrol lights and rolled out of the police headquarters.
To celebrate the department’s double-digit anniversary, residents are invited to visit HQ Monday afternoon and get a behind-the-scenes look at areas that are usually restricted to the public.
From 4 to 7 p.m., the department is showing off its mobile command center, crime lab, patrol and investigation units and holding cell, it said in a statement. The event will also feature equipment displays and giveaways.

Dunwoody incorporated as a city in December 2008, about four months before the police department started operations. Ten years later, it still has the same police chief.
“I could not be more honored to have served such a wonderful community for over a decade,” Chief Billy Grogan wrote in the department’s latest annual report. “I am exceptionally proud to represent the professional, committed men and women who comprise this department.”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported last week that the annual report showed a slight increase in crime last year in Dunwoody. The offenses consisted of mostly property crimes, but the category of violent crimes against people rose significantly, led by an increase in armed robberies.
