Dump truck overturns in Cobb County causing 12-car crash

A large dump truck overturned on busy Barrett Parkway in Marietta on Wednesday afternoon, spilling dirt onto the road and leading to a crash involving 12 other cars, Cobb County police said.
Preliminary information indicates that the truck was going west on Barrett Parkway and may have run through a red light at the intersection with Chastain Meadows Parkway, Cobb police spokesman Dana Pierce said.
Two people went to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Pierce said.
Surveillance video obtained by Channel 2 Action News showed the truck barreling down the road and running into a line of stationary cars, before skidding on its side and tipping over. It is not known what caused the truck to hit the cars.
Pictures from the scene showed dirt scattered over the road and on top of a car.
Only one westbound lane and two eastbound lanes are open on Barrett Parkway, Pierce said. It could take more than an hour to clean up, so Pierce advised drivers to avoid the intersection if possible.
According to the Cobb Department of Transportation, the crash was already causing delays.
A state truck inspector and tow trucks were called to the scene, Pierce said.
