The popularity of Food Truck Fridays in Duluth has prompted the city to review the Unified Development Code to insure compatibility with city guidelines. Until Monday’s council meeting, food trucks were only allowed during scheduled events in downtown.

After some debate about if mobile kitchens should be allowed outside the Central Business District, the City Council agreed to amend the UDC to add Mobile Kitchens with a special use permit in the CBD, commercial and historic commercial districts.

Additional guidelines require mobile kitchens must be integrated with a bar, brewpub, and/or restaurant that is legally in existence and meets all city, county, and state requirements. Mobile kitchens must be also kept in an area that is enclosed on three sides by a structure 6-8 feet high attached to the primary building, and materials and design must be approved by the Community Development Director. Finally, all mobile kitchens must use utilities provided by the primary building they are associated with. Portable generators are not acceptable.
