Following a moving and patriotic ceremony Saturday afternoon, Duluth unveiled ‘The Dream Keepers 9/11 Memorial’ and dedicated the “Handprints of Freedom” glass flag, created by Duluth resident and nationally acclaimed artist Kathy Fincher. The ceremony followed a parade of children hosted by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and included Governor Nathan Deal and First Lady Sandra Deal, sculptor Martin Dawe, U.S. Rep. Rob Woodall, former U.S. Rep. John Linder and city officials.
The life-size bronze was created to bring to life Fincher’s original pastel painting created post-9/11 to offer a message of hope to the youngest victims left behind by the loss of their parents and to American families. Fincher believes Duluth is a role model city for patriotism and a community that embodies the very spirit and unity portrayed by the children in the artwork who work side by side, using their handprints to put the American Flag back together as “The Dream Keepers of Tomorrow.”
The project was paid for with support from the Duluth Fine Arts League and private donations. The now unveiled sculpture can be viewed daily on the city’s Town Green.
