At Duluth’s most recent City Council work session, City Manager James Riker explained that Republic Services, the city’s trash provider, has asked for a price increase. Under the terms of this exclusive contract for waste management, the company is permitted to seek incremental increases. Riker asked the City Council for guidance to determine if the city should absorb the increase or pass it onto consumers.
Trash service in Duluth is based on the “pay as you throw” concept of bag usage, and considered competitively priced compared to other local cities. Based on this, the Duluth City Council recommends customers be responsible for any future increase. Notification of any price change will be passed onto residents prior to any modification.
