Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris painted an optimistic look ahead for the city at Monday evening’s State of the City address. Assuring citizens their future was in good hands, the mayor talked of attracting millenials to the city with jobs, upscale housing and quality schools.

In a review of the year’s accomplishments, Harris spoofed Jimmy Fallon’s Thank You notes bit with gratitude for the opening of Sugarloaf Marketplace, the ongoing redevelopment of Proctor Square, the opening of Brooks Coleman Middle School and the city’s new restaurants.

City staff joined the mayor to review progress with new housing developments, the improved downtown intersection at Highway 120/Abbott’s Bridge Road and Main Street, a new downtown parking garage, as well as the parks master plan update.

The city plans to improve lighting and remove overgrown shrubbery to deter crime and maintain the condition of existing roads. George Rogers Avenue, also known as the Hospital Connector, will break ground soon to connect Abbotts Bridge Road with the roundabout at the intersection of McClure Bridge Road, West Lawrenceville Street and Irvindale Road. The city can also expect new recreation trails, a new library and numerous park improvements.
