A man who jumped 30 feet from an overpass onto the highway below is being treated for his injuries.

Georgia State Patrol says a trooper pulled the man over as part of a DUI investigation on the Downtown Connector.

Gerado Alejos, 37, was spotted weaving on the interstate about 2 a.m. and was just about to be arrested for drunken driving when he leaped to the William Street on ramp below, the trooper said.

"After he fell, he rolled into the lane that a vehicle came within a few feet of actually striking him and hitting his head," State Patrol spokesman John Cronin said. "A unique and very hairy experience for sure."

The suspect has a broken leg and a serious arm injury.

The state trooper who tried to grab the man before he went over the bridge was not hurt, but was nearly dragged over the edge as well.

"When he realized what was about to happen, he let go because he didn't want to go down the same fall as the subject," Cronin said.

Cronin said Alejos then pulled himself across two lanes of traffic, where police arrested him and got him medical help.

Police say the man had a warrant for his arrest from a previous incident.
