A 40-year-old Gwinnett County man died after being shot late Thursday night following a drug deal gone bad, Gwinnett police said Friday afternoon.

Ulice Terrail Leatherberry was shot several times around 11:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of Hidden Cove Circle near Norcross, in the parking lot of his apartment complex, Cpl. Jake Smith said.

Investigators believe Leatherberry was a middle man for a drug transaction earlier Thursday in Atlanta, Smith said. But the buyers weren't happy and went to Leatherberry's apartment to get their money back, according to police.

As a middle man, Leatherberry couldn't return the money and fled his apartment, Smith said. The suspects, who police did not identify, caught up with Leatherberry in the parking lot and fired several rounds at him, killing him.

The shooting death remained under investigation Friday afternoon. Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Gwinnett detectives at 770-513-5300.
