Veronica Terry has lived in her southwest Atlanta home on the corner of Sandcreek Drive and busy Campbellton Road for 23 years.

She often hears car speeding past her Sandalwood Estates subdivision on Campbellton Road, and once before, an out-of-control vehicle plowed through her fence and ended up in her back yard.

But even that didn’t compare to the sound that woke her up about 8 o’clock Tuesday morning.

“I was in bed, I heard a crash and I jumped up,” Terry told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“I heard somebody knocking at my door and my alarm system went off,” she said. “When I came outside, an SUV had run into my den.”

She said the uninjured teenage driver of the SUV was sitting on the ground, upset.

“Although my home was destroyed, I was trying to comfort him at the same time,” she said, adding that the teen told her he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

“He lost control of the car, went airborne and went through the bushes and into my den,” Terry said.

Even though police told her that she couldn’t return home until the two-story house is deemed to be structurally safe, Terry was thankful.

“Everybody was okay, thank God,” she said.
