A part of Lions Club International, the Forsyth County Lions Club has been helping its low-income and uninsured residents receive access to vision and hearing care since 1961.

“These are services or exams a lot of us take for granted,” said President Steve Williams. “Through the organization, we are able to help over 150 people a year get access to these services.”

To bring community awareness and raise money, the nonprofit hosted Breakfast with the Easter Bunny at Fowler Park on April 12. The event saw over 300 local residents come to support the organization.

Nancy Hutcheon, who has volunteered with Lions Club for three years, emphasized the importance of these services for the local community.

“We see great involvement from the local doctors who donate their time and services to this cause and I volunteer because I get to act locally and see the direct impact of being involved with the group,” she said.

Volunteers, like Hutcheon, can get involved in various ways to continue spreading the work of Forsyth County Lions Club. “People can help us with events, if there a local doctors offices that can provide their services, or donate — all of that helps,” said Williams. People can also donate their used eyeglasses, used hearing aids and even old cellphones to the organization.

The breakfast aimed to raise over $1,000 which will help over 100 people in the community. The club has helped over 170 people in Forsyth get screenings and further services—such as eye surgeries—with other local partners.

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.3 million members in approximately 45,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world.
