DeKalb superintendent agrees to release audit

DeKalb County schools superintendent Cheryl Atkinson has decided to release an audit that she previously withheld from the public.

School system general counsel Sutherland Asbill & Brennan advised Atkinson that the KPMG draft audit was “privileged” accountant work product and therefore didn’t have to be given to the public, but the Georgia First Amendment Foundation said the document was a public record.

On Monday, system spokesman Jeff Dickerson was refusing to comment on the audit, saying school board members hadn’t had time to review it. By Tuesday, he was saying that the district would no longer be withholding it and that it would be posted on the school system website, though he didn’t say when.
