DeKalb County commissioners have unanimously voted to sell decommissioned airport property to the city of Brookhaven for nearly $6 million.
The 33-acre piece of land, purchased for $5.7 million, is behind a runway at the Peachtree DeKalb Airport that was decommissioned seven years ago. At the time, it was handling less than half of 1 percent of airport flights, which the airport and the Federal Aviation Administration determined was too low for the cost of maintenance.

The wooded space may be kept as greenspace, according to a DeKalb County release; Brookhaven officials have expressed interest in doing so.
“It is a reflection of our collaboration with Brookhaven to give them something that they needed and give us the opportunity to release the latent value of the property to fund other improvements,” said Commissioner Jeff Rader in the release. Rader’s district includes the property.
