DeKalb County repaired a 16-inch water main over the weekend after a leak left some residents without water.

Crews worked overnight Saturday to fix a “structural failure” in the main near Peachcrest Road in the Decatur area, the county said in a statement. Repairs were completed early Sunday morning.

The break on Christmas Day left dozens without water, Channel 2 Action News reported. Water service was restored by Sunday.

“I want to apologize to our customers who have been negatively impacted,” CEO Michael Thurmond said Saturday at the site of the water main. The county said if residents see brown water, they should run their faucets until the water is clear.

Thurmond said the pipe was constructed in 1950 and does not have the proper valves, according to Channel 2. The county is in the process of replacing its aging water and sewer lines through a series of projects costing millions of dollars.
