Calling all DeKalb County residents (and hoarders): DeKalb is holding its second annual landfill amnesty event on Saturday, May 19.

County residents can discard bulky and special collection items, bagged garbage, and other trash at the landfill that day — all for free.

This initiative is part of Operation Spring Clean Sweep 2018, a countywide cleaning effort.

The event, which will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be held at the Seminole Road Landfill, 4203 Clevemont Road in Ellenwood.

The first Landfill Amnesty Day was held last summer, bringing in more than 1,100 people, according to Pauline Andrea, spokeswoman for DeKalb County Sanitation Division.

Amnesty Day is only one of many events hosted by the Operation Spring Clean Sweep campaign, which combines the initiatives of multiple departments.

These events will focus on litter removal, illegal dumping and removing debris, trash and grass from streets, neighborhoods, sidewalks, roadway drains and county rights of way.

For Amnesty Day, residents can dispose of their furniture, small or large appliances, playground equipment, up to 10 tires, tree parts, yard trimming, bagged garbage and construction and demolition materials (like carpet, fencing, or decking).

No hazardous materials or commercial vehicles will be accepted.

The event is free for DeKalb residents who provide proof of residency.
