The first Waffle House opened 60 years ago this month in Avondale Estates just beyond Decatur’s city limits. Decatur, however, has never had its own Waffle House, at least not until the opening of a new restaurant slated for later this fall south of the town square beneath Eddie’s Attic.

Company spokes person Kelly Thrasher-Bruner said the 4,600 square-foot Decatur Waffle House — located in an early 20th-century building originally home to Belk’s Department Store — is projected to open late November/early December.

Though Waffle House is known primarily for suburban locations off interstate exits, Thrasher-Bruner said there are “a number of locations in Atlanta and other cities that do not have parking lots and are walk-ups (like Decatur) in downtown areas.” The company’s second restaurant, she said, was a walk-up at 10th Street and Peachtree Street in Atlanta, opening in 1957.
