By this summer the rebuilt Trinity Walk apartments, formerly Gateway Manor, will be finished and will become fully occupied. The public housing development features 121 units (the old Gateway had 88) on 5.8 acres. It took about two years to complete its two phases.
Trinity’s third phase involves rebuilding 1111 Oakview Road — a separate facility — originally constructed in 1961 and turned into affordable housing units in 1982. The Decatur Housing Authority will apply for low-income tax credits next week according to Executive Director Doug Faust. If successful—the DHA will know for sure by November —construction should start in spring 2018 and finish by spring 2019.
The new building will feature seven two-bedroom and 27 one-bedroom units on .81 acres. After Oakview, the DHA’s next project is rebuilding the 98-unit Swanton Heights originally built in 1969. The DHA’s reconstruction of all of its housing began in 2009 with the demolishing of the circa-1941 Allen Wilson Terrace, eventually replaced with 191 units on 7.68 acres south of downtown.
