During the final Superintendent Search Community Forum on Wednesday, Aug. 5, Decatur school board consultant Brad Draeger announced the job now has over 80 applicants. He said, however, he’s still looking to name Phyllis Edwards’ replacement by the second or third week of September.
This list should get narrowed to six to eight finalists in the next two weeks.
“From what I’ve heard, in the community and among staffers and teachers,” Draeger said, “nobody’s looking for a heavy-duty change agent, somebody to come in and burn Richmond. Most people agree [Edwards] will be a tough act to follow.”
The board should begin interviewing the finalists in late August, although Draeger added, “it’s just as much the candidate interviewing the board. They’re not going to work in a place where they can’t get along with the board.”
Edwards’ contract runs through Dec. 31 and she’s required to stay for a two-week transitional period after the new superintendent arrives.
