Decatur preparing to open first-ever indoor pool

Decatur is looking at mid-October for reopening the upgraded indoor pool at the Samuel L. Jones Boys & Girls Club. Last December the city struck a lease agreement with the Jones Club to use the pool — which has been closed for several years — on a year-round basis.

Renovations took about 2½ months and include a new entry way for pool access, re-tiling of the pool, new restrooms, new lighting and locker facilities. Total cost is $360,000.

This becomes the fourth pool under city supervision, and the first-ever indoor pool. At some point a fifth will get added upon re-opening of the United Methodist Children’s Home outdoor pool.

The next piece, according to Decatur Active Living Director Greg White, is dividing up the Jones Club pool programing. Besides serving as a year-round venue for informal swimming, the pool will also be the Decatur High swim team’s practice site. Meantime scheduling will include Boys and Girls Club swim lessons, programs for low-income swimmers and special programs like water safety and scuba diving.

Both the program schedule and pricing tier need final approval by the city commission, probably during its Oct. 2 meeting.
