Decatur Planning Director Amanda Thompson announced her resignation to take a job as Arts Program Officer for the Knight Foundation in Miami, Fla. She was hired by the city in May 2004 and promoted to planning director in 2007.

In the last two years Thompson supervised two major undertakings, revision of the city’s decades-old tree ordinance and organization of the massive, 412-page Unified Development Ordinance. She is also a professional dancer and choreographer for the modern dance company, the Zoetic Dance Ensemble based in Decatur.

She told the AJC Friday she wasn’t yet sure how the new job will affect her dance career.

“The first step,” Thompson said, “is to learn about Miami. I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunities to join the local arts scene there.”

Thompson will remain in Decatur through mid-August. Earlier this month Senior Engineer John Madajewski announced his retirement after 13 years with the city.
