A portion of Decatur’s North Candler Street will close beginning Wednesday for the installation of new storm drainage pipes.

This is part of the $1.35 million project that includes new pipeline starting at the fire station on East Trinity Place, heading southeast before turning left on East Howard Avenue, then left on Barry Street, with a total length of about 1200 linear feet. The overall project started in June and is expected to take one year.

North Candler will only be closed four to six weeks according to Deputy City Manager Hugh Saxon. The work area is on North Candler 150 feet north of East Howard where the new pipe will intersect with the old system that’s run under the old Decatur neighborhood for roughly 120 years.

East Howard will close to westbound traffic at North Candler, while North Candler temporarily opens to two-way traffic south of Pate Street (the unpaved road) during installation.

The city suggests Commerce Drive, Sycamore Street Church Street and East Trinity Place as a workable detour to all addresses.
