The man who has served as Decatur’s mayor for 14 years and helped transform the small DeKalb County city into a trendy intown community is stepping down.

Bill Floyd submitted his resignation Thursday, to take effect Jan. 7.

He is leaving to take a job with the Pendleton Consulting Group, a role that will have him working with local governments around the state and could create a conflict of interest if he stays in office.

Floyd was elected to the City Commission in 1991. Fellow commissioners first selected him as mayor in 1999 and have continued to elect him to the post since.
