Decatur is holding its first “Open Office Hour” this year 7 to 8 p.m. May 2, with Mayor Patti Garrett discussing the city’s transportation philosophy and potential solutions for inherent tensions between automobiles, bicycles and pedestrians. She’ll also talk about the city’s community transportation plan that’s being updated this year.

These issues are by no means limited to Decatur, and Garrett refers to cities like Seattle, Portland, Oregon and New York as “moving the needle” forward in using transportation alternatives.

“We want to be a bikeable, walkable, transit-oriented city,” Garrett said recently. “We are a dense city and there are a lot of people who want to get around Decatur, including a lot of kids. That said, we want to move cars in a more efficient way, it just may not be the fastest.”

The Open Office Hour can be viewed from a link on the city’s website at http://www.decaturga.com/. Beginning at 7 p.m. viewers/listeners can submit questions live via Twitter, Facebook, email or phone (404-370-4100). To submit a question in advance until 2 p.m. May 2 go to https://www.opentownhall.com/portals/49/Issue_6203.
