Decatur’s school board approved builders JE Dunn Construction and design team Collins Cooper Carusi Architects Tuesday night for work on phase one of Decatur High’s renovation and new construction.
The original contractor Winter Construction backed out of the project several weeks ago because it couldn’t match the school system’s budget numbers of $49 million total and $12 million for the first phase.
Despite the delay in securing a contractor, Program Manager Jeff Prine said construction should get started next month as originally planned.
Phase One includes renovation of the existing kitchen/cafeteria into a band suite and a new building (on the current rear parking lot) with two levels of classrooms and a new kitchen/cafeteria. Work should finish in August 2016. The architects are the same who designed the school’s arena and stadium and, more famously, the concourse renovation of UGA’s Stegeman Coliseum.
