A five-person group, calling itself Citizens for Decatur Kids, will spend the next 10 weeks campaigning for the $75 million general obligation bond, mostly needed for additions and renovations to Renfroe Middle and Decatur High Schools. The collective is led by former school board member Mark Wisniewski, now chairman of the Decatur Educational Foundation, though CFDK has no relationship to the foundation.

The group’s primary emphasis is educating the public on specific construction projects, why they’re needed and how they’re funded, while also advocating that voters pass the bill on Nov. 3.

Wisniewski said the group also wants to address any divide between residents who have school-age children and those who don’t.

“We want to get the bond passed,” he said, “but we want to reach that consensus in a healthy, non-divisive way. Historically, Decatur has always understood that public education is an investment that pays dividends. It’s not about old folks versus young, or longtime residents versus recent arrivals. We don’t want that schism in our city.”
