Decatur begins work on the long-planned Commerce Drive Cycle Track (or protected bicycle lanes) Monday April 22, with the project expected to take one year.
Work commences on Clairemont Avenue and Commerce heading towards West Trinity Place. The cycle track will get outlined with temporary striping that also marks work zones on both sides. Deputy City Manager Hugh Saxon anticipates minimal interference with day-to-day traffic and activities, though adding that at times, “It will get noisy, messy and inconvenient.”
Beginning at Clairemont, the cycle track heads south on Commerce to West Trinity Place, turning east on West Trinity and connecting with the North McDonough Street cycle track that was completed in 2017.
Commerce Drive will retain four vehicle lanes between Clairemont and West Ponce de Leon Avenue, three lanes between West Ponce and West Trinity, and four lanes on West Trinity.
Decatur is partnering with the PATH Foundation on the project. Total length is slightly more than a half-mile, the cost at $2.1 million, $700,000 of that paid for by PATH Foundation.
