Interim Cumming City Council member Doug Sorrells was sworn into office at the outset of Tuesday night’s meeting, but don’t look for him to stick around long.

Sorrells is temporarily filling the Post 1 seat which became vacant when longtime council member Rupert Sexton announced his retirement at the end of May. He’s the first new face on that body since the early 1990s.

A special election will be held June 16 to pick a candidate to serve the remainder of Sexton’s unexpired term, which runs through the end of 2017. The winner will be sworn into office July 21, replacing Sorrells.

Sorrells, who is a former Forsyth County clerk of courts, had said he had no interest in running for the unexpired term. The race has drawn four candidates who qualified last week.
