The Cumming City Council has voted 5-0 to dissolve the city’s Fair Authority, after concerns were raised about an appointed board and not elected officials being in control of the fairgrounds and whether it had the authority to make long-term agreements.

The decision came during last week’s City Council meeting. The ordinance given final approval allows the council to set up an advisory fair board in its place, which will give input only for the Cumming Country Fair and Festival each October and not the fairgrounds facility at large. The mayor and council members plan to appoint residents to that group at a later date.

The Cumming Fair Authority was created in 2013 to oversee the fairgrounds. The ordinance provides that any agreement the authority’s made involving the facility now reverts to being between the city and those parties.
